How To Repair Credit So You Don't Waste Money

By Chad Valiant Jnr

Do not hire someone to do what you can do for free. Use this article to learn how to repair credit without paying someone to do it for you.

Obtain a copy of all three of your credit reports first. You are entitled to a free report once a year from all the agencies. If you order them through the bureaus, they will charge you.

These reports can be ordered online, by phone or by mail.

Do not contact the bureaus for your free report.

FACTA offers the reports to you. Any other offers from other companies will require a subscription for a fee. Credit scores can be purchased separately but are not included with the free report.

Not all lenders or creditors report to the same bureaus. The bureaus also do not share information. Each one may contain different information about you. Having all three reports will provide you with a better picture of your credit history.

Extra copies are handy for disputing information contained in the reports.

Read the reports and understand what they mean to you. Mark incorrect information to dispute it.

Obtain the reports once a year to know what your creditors say about you.

Identifying information such as your name, address, employment and previous addresses are listed.

You may find your name misspelled. Ensure the identifying information is actually about you.

The summary found in the reports lists types of accounts, quantity of accounts that are current or past due and open or closed accounts. The balance, any public records and inquiries will also be included.

You will find more detailed information in the account history area. The creditor name, account number, account type, responsibility, monthly payment amount, date opened, date reported, balance, credit limit, loan amount, high balance, high credit, past due, remarks, payment status and your payment history will all be included in this section.

Dispute incorrect information such as: payments that were never late but reported as late, accounts that are not yours, past due accounts, collections, and charge-offs and maxed out accounts.

Detailed information about how to dispute inaccuracies is listed in the reports. Include a copy of highlighted incorrect information with the dispute.

The biggest part of your credit rating is your payment history. Increase your score by setting goals to bring all accounts current and showing a paid status.

Pay the open accounts first. Any that has been charged off need to be paid in full. Try to make payment arrangements with the collection agency if they will work with you.

The amount of debt when compared to the amount of credit makes up 30% of the credit score. Maxed out credit cards cost you point, so they need to be brought down below the credit limit.

When you have managed to get the negative items taken care of, start trying to have good information added. It may be necessary to reestablish your credit. To do so, you will have to open another account. If you get denied a credit card, try applying for a card from a department store. If that does not work, obtain a secure card.

While paying off bad accounts, good accounts should not be sacrificed.

If you are not able to resolve the issues on your own, then turning to credit counseling companies may be the answer.
